In fine dining you're not supposed to put the bottle on the table when opening otherwise bravo very cool little trick
Interesting behind the scenes look at the CMB wine competition. I think that there are haters and people who bad mouth wine judging events, but this video shows that it's full of real honest and down to earth people trying to realistically and fairly evaluate and score wine. Cool side note about the differences between Americans and Europeans in tasting and judging wine, hopefully this labelling and stereotyping of palates and preferences will finally start disappearing. Nice to see younger people getting involved in the industry and keeping it real. Great video, lots of fun and insightful. Many thanks!
I do understand the skepticism but the quality of medals is determined by the quality of wine submitted in competitions and in well known ones the selections can be quite good. During this one, I had a flight of Priorats and many well known wines were in it!
Hello Dr, if you come thru Chicago let me know. I need a pro to help me find a wine that I actually like. It seems port hits the spot but it doesn't count and it hits me like a 🔨. I like sauternes and late harvest chardonnay. I seldom find those. I need a red that fits the following -I cant get into the bone dry stuff. I need a red with a healthy dose of natural sweetness not a red Moscato.
Try Lambrusco Amabile (sweetness level)
Try Primitivo di Manduria. A lot of those have some residual sugar. They’re big reds made from Zinfandel grapes (Primitivo is the Italian name for the grape). It won’t be as sweet as Port of course.
I love this interview you are both so kind
🙏🙏
Touristic shit
Thats not a smile per say, but more of a wince he does when his level of concentration/focus is elevated, "helping" control his efforts to not fuck up. Same as when you see someone stick their tongue out a little, kinda biting it. Its just a mental tick, purely psychological, a mental defensive measure, in the case one does fuck up, any witness would be able to see it wasnt due to carelessness, with hopes of avoiding any repercussions or confrontations, but instead be met with a simple, almost rewarding, 'Awe man, thats too bad you almost had it too' or 'oh well, I know you tried your best'. followed-up with a, 'keep practicing kid, you'll get it eventually'.
My vote is for 6-8. It has struck me that Pinot Noir and Nebbiolo are two sides of the same coin, the Pinot Noir being the feminine side and the Nebbiolo being the masculine side. The Nebbiolo can do the beguiling ethereal things like Pinot Noir but there is that kick at the end something like Cabernet Sauvignon can do. Nerello Mascalese is the only other grape I know of that can also hold its head high in this group. True, an occasional Grenache can what these grapes can but that is rare. My heart goes out to you for struggling in a blind tasting like this, but you set up a very difficult task for yourself.
Thanks for the input!
You should do another cheap wine blind tasting test with Francis COPPOLA diamond collections black label 2021 claret included.
😮
Love super Toscans. You have to try Solengo from Argiano, some of the best value for money in my opinion.
Very good wine indeed
Great points! My goal is to try $70-100 bottles, then search for a $20-25 bottle I’m happy with as a daily drinker. Food isn’t just something I poop out😂💩
Good call by you! There’s a lot of great stuff to be had at $25-30
Great behind the scenes video Matt. So interesting!
Thank you!

It’s not history in the bottle
?
@@drmatthewhorkey If you find a piece of paper from that time or a piece of metal you won’t call it history. It’s just an old beverage

Bolgheri blind tasting video coming soon
I live in tijuana mexico, in the border with san Diego,ca.. here we have Valle de Guadalupe wines... There is at least 10 very good producers
come on men you said on another video that the Argentiera' Bolgheri Superiore was almost like sassicaia .,.. please give us the most closely to sassicaia jejeje
That wine is in this video
@@drmatthewhorkey is the argentiera bolgheri right?
I remain skeptical of wine competition results. Regardless, this was a really cool and interesting video!!
🙏🙏😎
When will be the next competition be held in Ningxia, China ?
Next June!
i love madeline and wine folly, the videos on their youtube channel got me into wine two years ago and now i’m going into a viticulture and enology program. i think they’re the blueprint on how to introduce wine to young people.
Niceee! Good luck to you
At what temperature would you recommend to drink orange wine?
Cool room temp like a red
Does Costco has ORGANIC dry red wine?
Yes! If it is a European wine, look for the Eco or Bio certification on the label, that is organic.
Great video, documenting the whole expirience.. thanks for showing us the world of wine from another view!
Thanks for watching!
Your energy is infectious, and every time I watch one of your vids I'm tempted to pull a bottle off the shelf. You're a bad influence. Haha.

Really interesting, thanks!

Interesting to see the BTS. Thank you!

KJ Chard is my standard. I frequently try others, but If I spend $25-$50 I want to know I’m getting something better than KJ and more often than not, I don’t. Unlike some others, my Chardonnay coming from a supermarket does not bother me at all. I also spent a lot learning that Chard coming from foreign countries and with names I can’t pronounce correctly does not ensure better wine. When dining out, if KJ is available that’s what I order. It’s consistent, predictable, and pleasing to my palate.
At the end of the day a lot of people like it - there’s a reason that it’s popular
My tragedy: I brought a $90 Pinot Noir to the in-laws for Thanksgiving. I hid it and was going to open it as a special toast, so everyone could taste the best Pinot I'd ever had. While I was out, someone found it, opened it and everyone (but me) just drank it while preparing dinner. It could have been a $10 bottle for all anyone knew.
😮😮😮😮😮😮
You are the first wine expert on UA-cam I have seen even mention Repour, and I love it! I have been using Repour corks ever since my first virtual tasting during the Pandemic when the Master Sommelier sent them to us with the full bottles we were going to taste, and I swear by them now. Great value for money and perfect for me anytime I want to do a tasting with lots of bottles or anytime I want to open something I know I can’t finish same night! Thanks for telling more people about Repour, it certainly changed my wine life!
It is a fantastic product!
Love Cremant - have tried all the regions in France except Savoie so far. The only Franciacorta I tried was a Blanc de blancs and it was excellent. Dry Lambrusco has also been a revelation for both taste and cost!
Yes it can be soooo good
I have tried 5 of 8, BUT I have a Saperavi in my cellar waiting to try still,so soon it will be 6! Armenia has been on my list for a long time as a wine country to try wines from, but it is very hard to find Armenian wine in central Ohio currently. The Nero Uva is on my list now, thank you for teaching me about it! I’ve only had Touriga Franca as part of the blend in Port, so I’ll look out for that one as a dry wine now. I took up learning about wine as a pandemic lock-down hobby, and it has been my goal to try as many different things as I can (the wine world is so vast!) I’m currently at 37 different countries and about 208 different grapes, so I LOVE videos like this to give me more ideas. So much fun!
Ahhh thanks and keep exploring
Both -- or perhaps rather all? New vs. old is not a competition about which is "better" but rather an expression of how wine changes over its lifespan. It is interesting and educational to drink the same wine young, mid-aged & old with the intent of finding common threads throughout. For example, the green stemminess that eventually presents as dried tomato leaves; the fresh oak/cedar that eventually becomes notes of leather, tobacco and forest floor; the ripe black plum that turns into dried black fruits. A few oldest wines for me: 1837 port (incredible tertiary fruit); 1923 Chateau Lagrange, St. Julien (lovely with tertiary perfumes and fruit for about 2 hours before drying out); 1937 G. Borgogno Barolo Riserva Speciale (light body but simply elegant tertiary flavors and great acid)
Port often ages splendid indeed!
I have done exactly this kind of blind tasting before, many times. Outcomes many times same as yours especially in Burgundy. It is always a fun learning experiment and certainly humbling!
Blind tasting is always humbling
LOVE Spanish wines! Some of the best bang for your buck reds out there, (and white Rioja is a secret gem). Really love Riojas, especially Lopez Heredia. Haven’t had a ton of Garnacha yet, but liked what I tried. Juan Gil has some incredible Monastrell for the money. Still need to try Ribera del Duero.
Ohhh Lopez de Heredia! There is a video about Jumilla on the channel too
@@drmatthewhorkey will go find that video!
Great Discussion and interview! A lot of insight gained. Thank you!
Wow thanks!
Have you had the Simple Life Pinot Noir? I’m picky about my wine and I will never drink a Yellow Tail ever again, but for $10-15 to me it is delicious.
As long as you like it!
